Dr Edwards completed specialist registrar training in cardiology at Southampton General Hospital and across the Wessex region, then trained as a clinical fellow in cardiac devices and electrophysiology at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne. He has performed first UK implants of latest-generation implantable defibrillators and heart failure devices, and is principal investigator for international trials.

Dr Phillips has been a consultant physician at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, since 1994, and remains active in acute medical care alongside his specialty. He is a former Vice President and Medical Director of Education at the Royal College of Physicians, and has held roles including Deputy Head of the Wessex School of Medicine, Treasurer of the British Thoracic Society and Regional Specialty Advisor for Respiratory Medicine in Wessex. He has authored over forty publications.
